7 Essential Tips for Decluttering Before a Big Move
Let’s Make Your Move Smoother With Less Stuff
Planning a big move? One of the best things you can do before packing a single box is declutter your space. Whether you’re upgrading to a bigger house or downsizing, getting rid of what you don’t need will save you time, money, and stress. But where should you start?
Here are 7 practical and super simple tips to help you declutter before your big move.
1. Start Early to Avoid the Last-Minute Rush
Don’t wait until the week of your move to start tossing things. Ideally, start at least 4–6 weeks before your move. Break the process into manageable chunks—room by room or even drawer by drawer. Trust me, future-you will thank present-you.
2. Use the Four-Box Method
When going through each space, grab four boxes and label them: Keep, Donate, Trash, Sell. This method keeps things organized and helps you make decisions faster. Be honest—if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s probably time to let it go.
3. Ask Yourself These Questions
Still unsure about an item? Ask:
Do I really use this?
Do I love it?
Would I buy this again?
If the answer is no, then it probably doesn’t need to come with you.
4. Declutter One Room at a Time
Jumping from the kitchen to the closet to the garage is overwhelming. Focus on one space at a time. It makes progress more noticeable and gives you that small win feeling that keeps you going.
5. Don’t Move What You Can Sell
Some items might not be worth the trouble of moving—especially heavy furniture or outgrown kids’ stuff. Consider selling these items online or at a garage sale. You’ll lighten your load and make a little cash.
6. Use the Opportunity to Digitize
Got boxes of old photos, papers, or receipts? Use this time to scan or digitize them. You’ll save space and protect memories from damage or loss.
7. Schedule Donation Pickups
Once your donate box is full, call a local charity to schedule a pickup. The earlier you plan this, the less likely the donation pile will turn into a “keep” pile again!

Decluttering before a move doesn’t have to be stressful. In fact, it can feel freeing! With fewer things to pack, unpack, and organize, you’ll love the head start you’ve given yourself in your new home.
