Are You Making Showings Awkward Without Realizing It?

When you're selling your home, every showing is your chance to impress potential buyers. But sometimes, well-meaning homeowners unknowingly make things... awkward. From hovering around to leaving pets loose, little things can create big turnoffs.

So, what should you avoid to make sure buyers fall in love with your home instead of sprinting for the door?

1. Sticking Around During the Showing

Buyers want to imagine themselves living in your home—not feel like intruders. Hanging around during the tour can make people uncomfortable, even if you’re just “being helpful.” Step out and let your agent do the talking.

Tip: Go for a walk, grab a coffee, or take the dog for a drive while your agent handles the showing.

2. Leaving Pets Loose

Even the friendliest pets can be a distraction. Some buyers might be scared of animals, allergic, or simply thrown off when a dog barks during their visit. Not to mention the lingering smells or fur.

Tip: Always remove pets from the home—or at least crate them—before a showing.

3. Ignoring Clutter and Personal Items

Buyers want to picture their stuff in the space, not yours. Family photos, piles of mail, or kids’ toys can make it hard for them to focus on the home’s features.

Tip: Declutter, depersonalize, and aim for a clean, neutral look.

4. Forgetting to Tidy Up Everyday Messes

A sink full of dishes or an unmade bed might seem minor, but it signals a lack of care—and can make your home feel less appealing. First impressions matter, and little things add up.

Tip: Before every showing, do a quick sweep: make beds, wipe down counters, and clear the floors.

5. Over-Sharing Information With Buyers

If you happen to run into a buyer or their agent, keep things short and sweet. Revealing why you're selling, how fast you want to move, or what offers you’ve rejected can weaken your position
